Sze Y. Set received a B.Eng (1st-class honours) from Southampton University, UK, in 1993, and a Ph.D. from the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), Southampton University, UK, in 1998. He was a research assistant at the ORC from 1995-1998 playing a key role leading an EU research project (ACTS MIDAS) culminating in a first field trial of 40Gb/s optical transmission in Europe.

Dr. Set was awarded the JSPS post-doctoral research fellowship to join the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), The University of Tokyo, Japan, from 1998 – 2000. He was a technical consultant and senior development engineer at Micron Optics, Inc., Atlanta, US in 2001, before he joined Alnair Labs Corporation, Japan, in 2002. He was appointed the CEO of the company in 2005.

Dr. Set has contributed to a several international patents and over 160 conference and journal publications, with over 2,300 citations (according to Google Scholar), in the areas of laser, optoelectronics and photonics. He is also the lead inventor of the carbon nanotubes short-pulsed laser back in 2003 (US Patent7372880)
